Fighting against exploitation of workers in Yarra

Yarra is a municipality of extreme inequality. Over 40% of locals earn $2600+ a week, yet Yarra is also home to three huge public housing estates where many residents survive on very low incomes. The area is also home the many students and artists who struggle with skyrocketing rents.

Residents would have been horrified to read in The Age last month about workers at a Spotless industrial laundry in Abbotsford who have been subjected to racist treatment seemingly straight out of a Dickens novel.

In recent weeks I have been working with these brave workers to help them fight for their rights – such as being paid for working overtime and not having to accept racist abuse.

Spotless enjoy a $2.4 million contract with Yarra to clean our streets. Our message to Spotless is that workers in Yarra will not turn a blind eye to this super-exploitation.
