Smith Street mural to be repainted

Over the past week a number of people contacted me about the defacing of the iconic feminist mural on Smith Street. Last night I moved a motion for Yarra Council to assist in the repainting of the mural. Thanks to all those who brought this issue to attention. Council should be playing a more active role in supporting local artists and protecting important public artworks.

Below is an update on the situation facing the mural from Colin who started the Refresh the Smith Street mural page on Facebook.

– Councillor Stephen Jolly

Colin: “Yesterday was a big day for the mural. Aptly on International Women’s Day, Megan Evans and Eve, the original artists, did a big response on the mural, in 40 degree heat. I posted the photo’s yesterday. Yarra Council organised this very quickly, in consultation with the artists, and organised some painters (honorary women for the day)  Ron Chapman and Tab. There was overwhelming support from local people who shared their views and brought drinks. Channel Nine turned up and interviewed Megan and Eve.

Su Chan and Yarra Council pulled this together very quickly; provided equipment hire, and permits from Vic Roads and Yarra Trams, and went up to State Gov level, so it just shows what can be done when there’s a will.

I met with Megan and Eve, over some welcome drinks out of the sun, and we exchanged views over the mural. I won’t speak for them but I think it’s fair to say they are surprised and pleased by the support for the mural and are open to ideas for its future.
I then took it to the Yarra Council meeting, supported by Júlia Palazzo and Vanessa Kowalski and Shane Van Den Akker and presented a petition of 2300 names from the FB page (that’s you!) and asked “if the council would support “the Women’s Mural” and explore all options for its future, in consultation with the artists and the community”. Cr Stephen Jolly moved a motion in support and the motion was passed!
Discussions with the artists and council will ensue and the community will have its say, (that’s you too!) so stay tuned.”
